NSLOOKUP
Using NSLOOKUP
Nslookup is a utility that comes pre-installed with all
windows systems. It is a very good tool for troubleshooting hosting and network
related issues. It has two modes Interactive mode and non-interactive mode
A quick lookup can be done like this
Notice that I defined the server to use after the domain, an
even quicker lookup would be by using the default nameserver of your windows
system
As indicated my default nameserver is set to google’s
8.8.8.8
Using a query type ‘any’ in non-interactive mode
By changing the parameter for -q= , different tyoes of records can be queried. like -q=mx or -q=A etc etc. The default behavior if -q is not specified is to query the A record.
As you can see the syntax of nslookup is
nslookup [-opt ….] host
So what are these options? Microsoft website lists the
following options for their nslookup
There is a lot of other cool stuff that can be done using nslookup. Head over to the Microsoft Technet page for nslookup page to learn more.
