Oracle Standard Edition High Availability

So recently Oracle announced End of Life for Oracle 12c. We were using Oracle 12c SE in our company for quite some time. So the natural next step was to check the upgrade path available.  Some research showed that we can upgrade to Oracle 19c SE wihtout any issue and good news was that its EOL was around 2027.

But surprise, surprise, Oracle decided to discontinue the Oracle RAC feature from Oracle SE. So if anyone requires to use the Clustering technology, they have to pay up for Oracle Enterprise Edition. Now price vise there is no comparison between SE and EE. So anyone who was paying for SE will have to look at alternate solutions to maintain same kind of KPIs as they were with Oracle SE RAC.

After some outcry from the Oracle community, Oracle has decided to launch an Active/Passive version of their RAC. This psuedo RAC is Active/Passive, takes around 1-5 minutes to switchover in case of node failure and so far limited online forum support is available. The good thing about this is that you can keep using your Oracle SE licenses and still run a cluster.

tl;dr Oracle has removed RAC, starting from version 19c, SE users will have to switch to Standard Edition High Availibility(Active/Passive) to keep using the cluster feature.
